NEWSLETTER - NOVEMBER 2024
Hello everyone!
As many of you know, I’ve recently resigned from the Monroe Institute (and, about a year ago, from the Foundation for Shamanic Studies) to dedicate more time to writing and exploring the sacred in all aspects of life — body, mind, spirit — with all of you. This path will include everything you've come to know me for — consciousness studies, spiritual development, ancestral practices, self-healing, mystical insights, and a bit of core shamanism — but with a larger emphasis on tools and practices for personal transformation, developing our spiritual gifts, creativity, and living with intention.
That said, welcome to this special preview of the Living a Sacred Life newsletter. This issue is packed with insights and practices for you to explore throughout the month of November. I invite you to take your time with each section and engage with the practices and reflections that resonate with you — or adjust them to suit your needs. Let these tools support you in creating moments of sacredness each day and if, by the end of November, you notice any positive shifts in your life.
This month's theme is "Connecting With Your Divine Mother" inspired by my recent podcast conversation with Sylvia Binsfeld, author of Holy Spirit Rising: The Vital Return of Our Divine Mother for the Healing of Our Planet. Upcoming themes I'm working on for next year include topics like: connecting with personal power, inviting change, grounding and centering, self-forgiveness, letting go of what no longer serves you, releasing anger, accepting change, standing in your power, returning to self, healing emotions that cause pain and illness, setting energetic boundaries, awakening intuition, developing your spiritual gifts, and more.

Welcome to Your Sacred Pause
Before diving into this month’s insights and practices, let’s begin with a moment of calm. I invite you to prepare a cozy, grounding drink — like the creamy chai tea recipe below or perhaps your favorite cup of coffee. Use this simple ritual to center yourself, creating a sacred space within. As you sip, allow yourself to be fully present, moving through each part of this newsletter with intention and openness. Notice what resonates and explore the insights or practices that speak to you most deeply throughout November. This issue is full of offerings to support your journey inward.
Savoring Comfort: A Homemade Chai Tea Recipe
Earlier this month I made this creamy chai tea recipe — perfect for fall. This blend not only warms your body but also signals a shift into a sacred moment, inviting you to slow down, reflect, and reconnect with yourself.
Ingredients:
-
1 cup water
-
1/2 cup cream, milk, or milk substitute
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
-
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
-
1/2 tsp ground ginger
-
1/4 tsp ground cardamon
-
1/4 tsp ground cloves
-
1 black tea bag
-
1 Tbsp honey, maple syrup, or sugar substitute
To make:
-
In a saucepan, whisk together the water, milk, and spices over medium heat. Continue whisking until the mixture begins to simmer.
-
Remove from heat and add the black tea bag. Steep for 5 minutes.
-
Remove the tea bag and add your favorite sweetener.
Making it Sacred: Each sip is a reminder of the beauty in slowing down, savoring the present, and reflecting on your blessings. Through this simple ritual of preparing and enjoying tea/coffee, you honor the importance of intentionally carving out sacred time to just "be" amid the hectic swirl of daily life. Let this ritual serve as a gentle reminder of the quiet, sacred moments you can purposefully create each day.

Starting Next Year: Three Ways to Engage

Looking ahead, I'm exploring new ways to offer meaningful, supportive content. Early next year I plan to introduce a few newsletter options for deeper engagement. While still in the planning stages — and subject to change, as my ideas may be too ambitious in comparison to my time availability (!!) — I'd like to offer three ways to connect:
-
Living Sacred Newsletter — An inexpensive (think: cost of a Starbucks coffee), subscription-based option offering expanded content that aligns with each monthly theme, practices, binaural beats guided meditations, and personal insights for those looking to dive deeper. Join the Wait List for the Living Sacred Newsletter
-
Daily Sacred Pause Newsletter — A free, bite-sized email with moments of reflection and inspiration to help you weave sacredness into your every day. Join the Wait List for the Daily Sacred Pause Newsletter
-
Monthly Reflection Newsletter — A free newsletter offering an article or insight on sacred living as a gentle reminder to stay connected to the sacred in everyday life (you are currently subscribed to this newsletter).
Why Subscribe to the Living Sacred Newsletter?
This deeper engagement is more than just extra content — it's an opportunity for us to walk this sacred journey together. We'll explore themes like the Divine Mother (and so many others) with practices, meditations, and personal guidance tailored to enrich your spiritual path. Think of each newsletter as a mini-retreat designed to help you align with your inner wisdom, deepen your spiritual growth, and integrate moments of sacredness into your daily life.
You can choose one, two, or all three newsletters based on the level of engagement that resonates with your path. This will be a 6-12 month experiment to explore how sacred living can enrich our lives in meaningful ways. If the journey proves to be fulfilling, we'll continue forward with new topics and ever-evolving practices that support spiritual transformation.
Your subscription not only supports your journey but also helps to sustain my ability to continue creating meaningful content. By joining, you help keep this work vibrant and flowing, allowing us to explore deeper insights, create more sacred practices, and make this journey richer for everyone involved.
My goal is to release each subscription newsletter a few days before each new month begins so you have a full month to read, explore, and engage with any information that calls to you. I hope you’ll find that the articles, practices, and reflections provide meaningful support for your journey into living a sacred life.

Living a Sacred Life: A Path to Resilience and the Unbreakable Spirit
Many of you know that in 2016, my family and I narrowly escaped a devastating wildfire that took the lives of 14 residents — including one of my daughter's nine year old best friends — and destroyed over 2,500 homes and buildings in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Our home, businesses, and physical memories burned that night, forever shifting the course of our lives. This tragedy profoundly changed my life, reshaping both my work and how I viewed the world. Even before this, I had endured challenges and was guiding clients through their own difficulties, but this event opened my eyes even more to the immense challenges we all face, from smaller disappointments to unimaginable losses.
After this personal and community tragedy, I entered a cycle of grief, and it took me quite a while to claw my way back to a “new normal." While

clawing, I used my time searching for answers that I hoped would be revealed to me about human suffering. Was there a way(s) to escape the cycle and impact of suffering? Or, at the very least, tamp down its hold over us and find ways to build resilience and peace while cultivating the inner strength and clarity to move through life’s challenges more gracefully?
We can look back and review the choices or decisions we may have made — sure — but what about situations that were beyond our control? For years I’ve been exploring the nature of human suffering and resilience — seeking an answer to the question: what’s the cure? This journey led me to begin writing Unbreakable Spirit: Ancestral Wisdom and Sacred Practices to Help You Heal, Transform and Thrive, a book grounded in these discoveries. I'll give you a hint about the cure: it’s about walking in the wisdom of our ancestors. Hay House Publishing has recognized Unbreakable Spirit with an “Honorable Mention” in three of its writing competitions, and now it’s time for the book to be fully birthed.
There is no single answer to ending suffering because our difficulties are as unique as each of us. There is no "one size fits all" solution. Rather, it’s a journey that requires shifting perception, developing proactive solutions, practicing self-compassion, and being open to opportunities for growth using the insight we can receive through consciousness and the wisdom practices of our ancestors. My journey taught me that by living with sacred awareness and integrating practices that ground us, bring us into a place of stillness, and allow us to hear the quiet guidance of our inner voice and Spirit, we can soften the impact of life’s challenges. In this way, we can not only navigate our own obstacles with grace but also help our loved ones find resilience, standing beside them and sharing the tools that have supported us.
For me, Living a Sacred Life is a movement dedicated to discovering inner peace, clarity, and transformation by embracing sacredness in everyday moments. Through intentional living, deep spiritual connection, and creative practices, we can let go of old patterns, welcome new possibilities, and live with mindfulness and purpose. By focusing on spiritual practices, mindfulness, higher wisdom, nature, and tools for reflection and healing, we can awaken our souls and align with the vibrations of grace and abundance. Life’s challenges will inevitably still arise — they are part of the human experience — but we will have the tools, practices, and mindset to face them with resilience.
My goal is to bring these insights and tools to you in meaningful ways — bits and pieces for you to engage with, explore, and integrate — helping you to create your own UNBREAKABLE SPIRIT.
When I create oracle cards, I often pull images intuitively, not knowing why I chose them — at first. Over time, as I work with the cards, the symbology begins to reveal itself, peeling back deeper layers of meaning that match the theme of each card. I find that these visual elements often hold messages I hadn’t planned or thought of which gives me, or whoever is reading the card for themselves, a way to automatically personalize the information simply based on what the symbols evoke for them.
I believe the energy of oracle cards can shift over time — they're fluid — and I often rewrite the meanings based on how their energy feels to me in the moment. I encourage you to do the same. Golden Essence is the cart I pulled to represent our energy for November. To begin, sit with the symbology and see what resonates with your current life experience and trust in your own intuition to guide your personal message. You may not even need to read beyond the symbology and into the guidance section, just reading the symbology may be the answer you need.
Symbology:
-
Golden Woman’s Face: The golden face symbolizes the essence of beauty, self-worth, and the transformative power of accepting yourself — your authentic self — not necessarily the face you show the world. The gold represents the value and importance of inner beauty as well as the resilience that comes from embracing who you truly are.

-
Art and Document Shelves: The man pulling art prints and the women filing documents represent being able to pull our stored knowledge as well as the importance of preserving, reflecting on, and learning from our past experiences. There's a creative element here also — that by pursuing creativity, we can reach the deeper answers when we allow ourselves to move into the stillness of "creative flow."
-
Vintage Filing Drawers: The drawers symbolize the past, our heritage, and the process of reflection, situational perceptions, and how we archive memories. They remind us of the importance of history — our own, our family line, and even our collective history — in shaping our identity and how we can draw from past experiences to inform our current and future choices, difficulties, and personal growth.
Main Energies: self-worth, authenticity, reflection, resilience, creativity, intuition, spiritual guidance, empowerment, growth, clarity
Guidance: “Golden Essence” is about honoring your worth by reflecting on your journey and experiences. This isn’t so much about dwelling on the past, but rather recognizing the wisdom you’ve gained and using what you've learned to guide you forward when you're experiencing difficulties or making decisions.
Our sense of worth includes self-acceptance — and self-acceptance becomes a powerful tool when you're facing any uncertainty because you need to have faith and trust in who you are authentically in order for you to do the right thing, make the right decision, and move forward with confidence and clarity.
Remembering and acknowledging where you’ve been, who you once were, and who you now are can help ground you in moments of doubt. You've truly come so far and you are wiser than you realize. As you move forward with self-assurance, instead of seeking external validation, first draw upon your intuition using your past "golden" lessons as markers on how to move forward with clarity.
Creativity is also important with Golden Essence. It’s in the quiet and stillness of creating that time seems to slip away, allowing our left-brained ego to step back and make room for new ideas, insights, and problem-solving wisdom to sneak into our consciousness. Within this energy, Spirit can better reach us, gently guiding us to see the next step to take or the choice that feels most aligned. This creative flow allows us to process and find clarity, uncovering answers that may have felt out of reach when we are in the mindset of our hectic lives.
Golden Essence reminds you that you already hold the wisdom, strength, and clarity waiting to be drawn upon whenever life calls you to take the next step.
Podcast: Missing Our Divine Parents
Sylvia Binsfeld, podcast host and founder of DreamWeaver Films and the Conscious Media Movement, and Amara discuss the deep human need for parental figures, emphasizing how, even as adults or parents ourselves, we continue to crave the unconditional love, wisdom, and support that we associate with mother and father figures. Whether due to the loss of a parent through death, trauma, or fractured relationships, this absence leaves a lasting emotional impact, contributing to ongoing suffering. The conversation delves deeper into the spiritual dimension of this loss, exploring how the removal of the Divine Mother from our consciousness has intensified this void. Amara explains that by reintroducing the Divine Mother into spiritual practices, individuals can experience profound healing, filling the gaps left by parental wounds and societal imbalances. Through a conscious connection with both the Divine Mother and Father, we can restore balance and access the wisdom needed to navigate life with greater emotional and spiritual wholeness.

I learned a long time ago to live my life paying attention to synchronicities. I see them as divine sparks guiding my choices and validating my path. As I was working on this newsletter, I had a profound moment of connection that felt like more than a coincidence. Side note: I don't believe in coincidences, only synchronicities.
When I was very young, my mother divorced my father. The stories I heard about him were painful, and as I grew older, I didn’t feel a strong need to seek him out. My mother remarried and my stepfather adopted me. While the relationship with my step father was challenging for me, I honored the ways he provided stability for our family, even if it wasn’t a deeply nurturing connection.
Over the years, I've come to believe that our parents do their best based on the tools and experiences they learned from their own
parents. Like us, they're shaped by their own challenges and triumphs. People fail other people for so many reasons and, when we feel let down, we have two routes to take — learn from our experiences and become better because of them or become carbon copies of those that raised us and continue the cycle.
While writing this newsletter, I received an unexpected notification from Ancestry.com that I had a new “hint” (a new relative discovery). My updates made a connection to a “first cousin” who had been suggested for my family tree. I know all of my cousins, so I was surprised to see this hint. As I clicked on the information about my new cousin find, I realized he was the nephew of my birth father.
Because I’d shown interest in this cousin, Ancestry began suggesting a few other connections, and then … there he was. A high school picture of my birth father, who had lived in the same city as I did for over a decade, yet had never reached out to connect with me in my 56 years. Ancestry then let me know that he passed away a year ago. Even if I had wanted to connect, that door had been officially closed.
I couldn’t believe how hard this hit me, stirring an unexpected wave of grief. Though I grew up with my birth mother and adoptive father and had long ago accepted my birth father's absence, seeing his face for the first time brought a mix of emotions. When I was younger, I wondered what he looked like — and did I resemble him? My mother didn't save any of his photos, so seeing his high school picture was my first glimpse into the other half of where I came from. In his photo, I could see hints of my own sons in his features. To add to the complex emotions rolling around in my head, I discovered I have a half-brother and a half-sister from his later marriages — siblings living their lives likely unaware of my existence.
Needless to say, it was a rough few days for me. Questions from my childhood began to resurface: "How would my life have been different?" and "Would my life have been better if I had a relationship with him?" … But ultimately, my childhood was exactly what it needed to be to shape me into who I am today.
So where do the Divine Parents come in? Lacking my ideal parental connections, I have long been able to work in a higher consciousness state to retrieve the parental-type wisdom and guidance I needed to develop on my own journey, heal from past wounds, and gain a deeper sense of inner peace and direction. Using binaural beat audios and shamanic journeying for entering a theta state of consciousness has been a bridge to connect me to that divine wisdom, guiding and supporting me throughout the last decade.
If you, too, feel the need for nurturing parental energy, whether due to separation, loss, or strained family dynamics, I encourage you to explore this connection. I invite you to listen to the "Connecting to Your Divine Mother" guided meditation two sections below, which can bring you to a sacred space where the essence of motherly love is always available. If you need fatherly love and guidance, you can listen to the same meditation and just ask for the Divine Father energy to come forward for you.
Holy Spirit Rising: The Vital Return of Our Divine Mother for the Healing of Our Planet
In the beginning, humanity recognized a Divine Mother alongside God, reflected in the original creation story. However, biblical redactions altered this, erasing the feminine and distorting our perception of God, the world, and each other. Holy Spirit Rising delves into these changes, revealing how they diminished women, heart-centered wisdom, and nature, disrupting the balance of yin and yang. As the planet faces great challenges, this book emphasizes the vital need for the return of the Divine Mother for humanity's healing and a more conscious, loving world.
-------------------------------------------------------
Amara's Review: I found this book to be an enlightening and thought-provoking read, diving deep into the divine feminine and her crucial role in our spiritual and planetary healing. Sylvia clearly researched this topic and expertly explores how the erasure of the Divine Mother distorted our understanding of God, ourselves, and the world around us — while at the same time writing in a tone that is relatable (not academic). This book offers a profound message of hope, reminding us that reconnecting with the Holy Spirit’s maternal energy can restore balance and wisdom in our lives. A truly powerful guide for those seeking deeper spiritual truth and healing.

ANCESTRAL STORYTELLING: In this guided meditation, we embark on a journey rooted in the ancient ancestral practice of storytelling — a powerful tradition that has long been used to impart wisdom, provide comfort, and guide us through life’s challenges. Binaural beats, infused within the meditation, take approximately 4-7 minutes to induce a theta consciousness state. As you immerse yourself in the story woven throughout this meditation, you will seamlessly transition into a theta state of consciousness, where true transformation begins.
GUIDED MEDITATION: This journey is an opportunity to connect with your Divine Mother, open yourself to her guidance and support, perceive any messages she has for you, and begin building a lasting relationship. As you move through this experience, allow yourself to fully embrace her presence, knowing that she is always here to provide comfort, protection, and insight. Her essence is a constant, unwavering force that surrounds and supports you. NOTE: Be sure to wear headphones — binaural beats work best with headphones because they send slightly different frequencies to each ear helping the brain synchronize and move into a theta state. Without headphones, you might notice the audio sounds a bit "off."
While working on the "Connecting to Your Divine Mother" guided meditation, I came across this beautiful prayer/chant written and recorded by Ananda Devi Vdovic in 2002. This serene, sacred chant *really* resonated with me and I felt it held the profound reverence, peace, and healing energy of the Divine Mother. It serves as a prayer of devotion, offering comfort and invoking the divine feminine presence for guidance, nurturing, and spiritual protection.
I invite you into sacred space to allow yourself to feel — on a soul level — the prayer and try this as a method of connection, reflection, and guidance.
-
Sacred Space Setup: Create quiet space with a candle, flowers, and a picture or statue representing the Divine Mother. See the next newsletter section for a link to images representing the Divine Mother that you can print and place in your sacred space.
-
Grounding: Before you begin, sit in stillness, breathe in and out slowly 10 times.
-
Listen and Reflect: As the "Devi Prayer" plays, focus on the vibration of each word, visualizing the Divine Mother wrapping you in her light. Note how the words pull you in and affect you.
-
Intentions: After the prayer, write or speak out loud your intentions for healing, guidance, or wisdom, then sit in stillness and see what emerges.
-
Journaling: End your practice by journaling any insights, feelings, or messages received.

Connecting with the Divine Mother Through Images
One of the things I've observed is that many people struggle to envision what their Divine Mother might look like, especially if they’re new to this kind of spiritual work. Having a visual representation can be a powerful tool — it helps create a focal point that anchors you during meditation or sacred practices. When you’re engaging with the guided meditations or practices in this newsletter, having an image of the Divine Mother may help you feel more connected and grounded.
If your spiritual tradition already includes a Divine Mother figure, you have a beautiful foundation to start with. But for those who are exploring this connection, I've created a collection of images on Pinterest that capture various expressions of Divine Mother energy. These images are meant to help you find a visual that resonates, something that feels right to place in your sacred space or carry with you.
I’ve held each of these images in my own sacred space (see picture) and they have been cleared and energized with the intent to hold the Divine Mother energy of nurturing, wisdom, and protection. Think of it as a gentle activation, a way to infuse these visuals with love and guidance. While these images are not tied to any particular belief system, my hope is that you can use them as a supportive presence, letting their energy hold space for you in your own practices.
To explore and choose a Divine Mother image, visit my Pinterest page by clicking the button below. Print any that speak to you and use them to enhance your personal space, meditation practice, or any other moment when you wish to feel her presence close by.
I invite you to take time throughout the month to pause and surround yourself in sacred sound. One piece that brings me into a state of deep peace is:
🎵Tibetan Healing Flute🎵
Use this time to take a sacred pause — close your eyes, breathe deeply, and let the music bring you into alignment with your inner peace. You might want to join this with your coffee/tea sacred pause moments. Whether you have 5 minutes or 30, let this be a moment of sacred renewal.
Renewal from the Unexpected

Nature if one of my greatest loves. I have long believed it has the ability to give us answers and inspiration — a true "divine messenger."
I was walking my labyrinth the other day and as I neared the outer loop, I saw this sprout growing up from a long dead tree stump. This tree, along with about 100 others, was burned and damaged beyond repair during the 2016 Gatlinburg wildfires I mentioned previously. Only five trees on our entire property survived — each one holds great meaning for me, as well as the energy surrounding the heart-shaped labyrinth formed after the fire scorched the earth.
As I knelt down to get a better look and snap this picture, I felt this message rise:
The Divine Mother guides life to be created in the unlikeliest of places — just as this sprout grows from the heart of a long lost tree. She is the great creator, showing us resilience and rebirth in ways we can see all around us if we look closely. She reminds us that what seems lost or lifeless can many times just be a hidden or quiet space for new growth to take root. Endings are not always final. Sometimes they are gentle pauses creating space for what’s meant to come next on our journey.
And so it is.
This image and its message holds great meaning for reflection on this month's Living Sacred theme. As you reflect on this image, consider:
-
What parts of your life may seem "finished" but hold seeds of potential?
-
Where in your own journey can you nurture new life, new ideas, or fresh perspectives?
Let the Divine Mother’s presence inspire you to trust in cycles of renewal and growth — even in the spaces where hope feels distant.
Living Sacred Practice: Calling Upon the Divine Mother
I wrote the prayer below many years ago when I was struggling. Please note if the words "Divine Mother" don't resonate with you, feel free to replace these words with those that align with your own belief system. This practice is designed to help you open up to the nurturing, guiding, and transformative energy of the Divine Mother. It can be done when you're seeking comfort, wisdom, or a deeper spiritual connection.
Create a Sacred Space: Before beginning, find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed. You may want to create a small altar or sacred space and include items like:
-
A candle (to represent divine light).
-
A crystal or stone that represents nurturing energy (i.e., rose quartz).
-
A symbolic item that connects you to the Divine Mother (i.e., a small statue, flowers, or a personal item). For inspiration, I have shared a number of Divine Mother images above in the "Connecting with the Divine Mother Through Visuals" section.

Ground: Sit still, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Slowly breathe in through your nose and exhale through your mouth — 10 times.
Visualize: See yourself surrounded by a soft, radiant light — the presence of the Divine Mother. Place your hands over your heart and feel the warmth and love flowing into your heart center with each breath — breathing through your nose and exhaling through your mouth another 10 times.
Practice: Light your candle and recite the prayer out loud slowly and intentionally. As you say each line, feel her presence surrounding you, offering wisdom, compassion, and insight. I usually repeat the prayer three times to deepen the connection.
---------------------------------
Divine Mother, be with me.
You are the container of great secrets, help me to understand.
You are the teacher of great mysteries, help me to understand.
You are the knower of great truths, help me to understand.
You are a carrier of the gifts of Spirit, help me be like you.
You are a holder of great compassion, help me be like you.
You are a spiritual mother of all, help me be like you.
You understand the rise from despair, walk with me.
You understand pain and sorrow, walk with me.
You understand the walk from dark into light, walk with me.
You see what I cannot see, help uncover my eyes.
Divine Mother, be with me.
---------------------------------
Reflection: After reciting the prayer, sit quietly for a few moments. Do any feelings, images, or insights rise up?
Journal: Write down your reflections. You might also want to explore these questions:
-
How do I feel supported by the Divine Mother today?
-
What part of the prayer resonated with me the most?
-
What wisdom is coming through for me at this time?
Closing Your Practice: When you're ready, thank the Divine Mother for her presence and guidance. You can offer her a small token of gratitude (placing a flower on your altar or another gesture that feels meaningful to you). Blow out the candle.
Daily or Weekly Practice: Come back to this practice whenever you need guidance, nurturing, or support. You can make this sacred practice part of your morning or evening routine or use it during times of uncertainty.
Enhance with Prayer Beads: To deepen this practice, consider using prayer beads. With each bead, recite one line of the prayer, allowing the combination of the rhythmic motion and words to bring you deeper into the Divine Mother’s energy.
Image: This painting is from one of my beloved artists, Susan Seddon Boulet. I encourage you to explore her collection of ethereal and soulful artwork. I have linked a grouping of her images below.
